In an effort to foster deeper and more enjoyable learning experiences, the Association of Educational Institutions for Teacher Training (ALPTK) of Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah Universities (PTMA), in collaboration with Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof. DR. HAMKA (Uhamka), held the Ramadan Deep Learning (Online Focus Group Discussion) as part of the 7th ICEDUALL under the theme:
“Deep Learning: Mind, Meaning, Joyfully.”
The event was conducted via Zoom Meeting and YouTube on Tuesday, 25 March.
This valuable event featured several prominent figures, including Prof. Abdul Mu’ti, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education of Indonesia, and Prof. Gunawan Suryoputro, Rector of Uhamka. The event was also attended by Uhamka stakeholders and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) participants from educational professionals at both secondary school and higher education levels across Indonesia.
The Ramadan Deep Learning ICEDUALL 7th also invited distinguished speakers such as Prof. Harun Joko Prayitno, Chairman of the ALPTK PTMA Association; Prof. Suyanto, Professor at UNY; and Prof. Marc Gendron from the University of Montreal.
Prof. Gunawan Suryoputro, as the keynote speaker, emphasized that implementing mindful, meaningful, and joyful aspects within the deep learning concept could be an effective approach for educators to create more dynamic learning experiences.
“By fostering active, interactive, and communicative learning processes, educators can encourage students to engage more cognitively, emotionally, and socially in the learning activities,” he said.
“Ultimately, this approach helps students develop higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), which are essential for facing modern challenges,” he added.
In his presentation, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Prof. Abdul Mu’ti, stressed that deep learning is part of the government’s efforts to address the learning loss experienced by students in recent years.
“Deep learning will guide today’s learning systems to discover new methods, where students’ thinking abilities are not merely determined by scores and grades, but also through learning processes that connect discovered facts with the meanings they derive,” said Prof. Abdul Mu’ti.
He further added that deep learning can effectively tackle learning loss in Indonesia, steering the education system to innovate. With this method, students’ cognitive abilities are assessed not just through numbers and grades, but through meaningful learning experiences that link facts with comprehension.
Prof. Harun Joko Prayitno, in his presentation, elaborated on the concept of deep learning, which aims not only to improve the quality of education but also to encourage innovation in the educational sphere. One concrete initiative being planned is the formation of the PTMA Deep Learning Symposium, envisioned as a platform for academics, educators, and education practitioners to discuss, share experiences, and develop more effective and meaningful learning strategies within the Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah university environments (PTMA).
“This webinar is highly beneficial for the education sector. Moving forward, we should involve practitioners who are implementing deep learning — whether teachers, supervisors, or school principals,” he added.
He also suggested that this activity should be conducted in series to foster interest among academics in enhancing deep learning-based education. These ideas will not stop at the initial discussion stage but will continue to develop and be further analyzed through the Deep Learning Journal, which will serve as an academic platform for various ideas, research, and the latest findings on related topics. Through this publication, diverse perspectives will be explored in depth to enrich insights and contribute significantly to the development of theories and practices in the field.
Moreover, the journal is expected to become a valuable reference for academics, researchers, and practitioners seeking to delve deeper into current and emerging educational issues.
